I did mention that this is a micro-fic, didn't I? I mean, you can only write just so much while on hold.
Catching Something Valuable
I don’t own these characters. I just like to spend time with them. No other profit to be had.
Kitty sat next to Doc on the banks of Spring Creek, smiling wistfully as she eyed his new fishing reel.
Doc looked on knowing her mind wasn’t really on the reel.
“I guess, I know what you’re thinking of.” He sighed. “Or should I say ‘who’?”
“Huh?” Kitty looked up at him with a frown. “What do you mean?”
“I mean your mind is not on our fishing trip and most certainly not on me.” Doc pretended to pout.
Kitty dropped her head. “I’m sorry, Doc. I was just…”
Doc shook his head. “Don’t be sorry. I could tell by the way you were looking you were thinking of a certain lawman. He’s the only one I know of that can make you smile like that.”
“Now, that’s just not true.” Kitty protested. “I smile at a lot of things, and people. As a matter of fact, I smiled at you this morning when you picked me up, didn’t I?”
“Yes.” Doc agreed. “You did. But ‘that’ smile. You reserve ‘that smile’ for only that tall badge wearer. I assume you were thinking of something good.”
Kitty grinned and nodded. “I was remembering the first time I ever came out here. Matt brought me. Only I didn’t have a fancy reel like yours. I just had willow branch and some string. But it didn’t matter. We had so much fun. We…” Kitty stopped as she remembered exactly what they did in addition to fishing. Doc knew she and Matt were now more than just friends but still she wasn’t going to go into details. “We fished.” She finished lamely.
“Un huh.” Doc shook his head, baited his hook and tossed the line into the water. “I just bet you did.”
Kitty him a brief stern look then burst into a merry laughter that echoed up and down the banks of the old fishing spot. “Believe me, Doc.” She continue to chuckle. “We fished.”
“Uh huh.” Doc repeated. “And just exactly what did you catch?”
Kitty paused before softly answering. “Something valuable, Doc. Something very valuable.”
Doc grinned and gave her a quick hug. “That you did, Young Lady. That you did.”
